So this Kabbalist I met was covered in tattoos and claims that originally it was an obligation/mitzvah to have certain religious symbols tattooed on yourself....
I can not find ANY text backing this up, but he's not the only one I have heard it from....
Any comments?
Plus, when do I get to see some of these tattoos!

Re: Kabbalistic Jews and Tattoos
Tue, March 2, 2004 - 12:52 PMhey jill- in the Vayafta, prayer following the Shema (clearly these are all transliterated) it says "and they shall be for frontlets between thine eyes and upon your hands. . . " now, knowing the way this is interpreted, you will say that that is the reason for the use of tefillin- and mezuzot- but, some use this as the justification for why tattooing is acceptable since it never says WHAT you are supposed to use as frontlets between your eyes. it only commands us to acknowledge these holy spaces and use them to praise g-d as the only g-d. some say that people would tattoo themselves between their eyes and on their hands, others would totally disagree with this idea. just a midrash, i justify my tats with the idea that beacuse i was made b'tzelem eloheim- in the image of g-d, whatever i do with my body makes it holier- enhances it, my intention is by no means desecrating it. l'shalom- jesykah
i love that people are talking about these things.
